Babies are here!
Boy, 63 days goes fast! Here are some pictues of Maggie and her new puppies. She had 8 puppies. Five are chocolate, two are silver and one is gold! There are only two boys in the whole litter. They were born February 24, on my cousin Chad's birthday. We even named the blonde boy Chad in honor of Chadder.
Maggie started delivering her puppies at 2am. Mom sat up all night with her, watching her pace and pant. Then, the golden girl was the first one out. Feet first. They say that is called Breech.
Then, mom woke us up and said, "We've got a blonde girl!" The chocolate male was next just 15 minutes later. But it took a long time for the next one. A couple hours later she had the silver male (Chadder). We waited until 8am, and still nothing. Mom called the vet and we took Maggie and the three puppies to Tecumseh.
Once we were there, Maggie delivered a chocolate girl, but things were going really slow. The doctor took an x-ray and said there were two or three babies in there and if she didn't deliver in the next half hour, she needed some help. The doctor gave Magge two shots of oxyitocin, but it didn't help. She went in for an emergency c-section to deliver the rest.
It was kind of scary at first. The doctor put Maggie under, then they delivered the babies. The x-ray didn't see all of them, because the doctor pulled out the last four. What was really scary, was Maggie's heart stopped a couple of times. The doctor knew what he was doing and brought her back. Mom was pretty scared. Then, the doctor was handing puppies to Heather, (Gabe's girlfriend), Gabe and Mom. They had to pull the puppy out of this gooey sack, then rub its back really hard. They aren't breathing air when they first come out, so you have to get their lungs working.
The doctor pulled out three little sacks that the babies were in, then two big puppies. He said she never would have been able deliver all of it. It was stuck. Good thing we have such a smart vet. He pulled out two chocolate girls, Mocha and Cocoa, then the silver girl, then the tiny runt. I named the chocolate runt Ruby. I picked it because Ruby the Runt sounds nice.
We were really worried about Ruby. One of the doctors was holding her right when she came out, but she had a tough time breathing. Mom didn't think Ruby was going to make it. The doctor looked a bit worried and that made Mom worry. Then, all of a sudden, she heard something that sounded like a bird's churp. It was Ruby! But, then, she went quiet again. She wasn't out of danger yet. The vet kept rubbing her really hard. All of a sudden, "Churp, Churp!" Ruby was going to make it! Whew. That was a close call.
We are taking pictures of all of them for the families that buy they puppies. We think it will be nice for them to see their babies right from the start. We had to feed all of them with bottles for the first day because Maggie was so sore and loopy from the medicine.
Three days after they were born, the puppies are feeding off of Maggie every two hours and most of them have dropped their umbilical cords. We have a steady stream of visitors to hold the puppies. Check out the adorable pictures!
